Scott & Marion Murphy - International Students Ministry - Atlanta, Georgia

Scott & Marion

Population: 105,859
Religion: Christian
Language: English

The Murphy’s are working in Tyler with The Navigators International Student Ministry (ISM) at the University of Texas at Tyler. Scott grew up in Tyler, while Marion is from Iowa. They married in 1981, then moved to Beijing, China, for two years to teach English. They joined Bethel Bible Church in 1983 and were blessed with five children. In 2003, they moved to Dalian, China with their two younger children, studying Chinese and teaching English for eleven years. Upon returning to the U.S., as empty nesters, the Murphy’s lived in Atlanta, GA, serving with The Navigators ISM for five years and ministering primarily to Chinese graduate students at Georgia Tech.

Scott and Marion returned to Tyler during the height of Covid in May 2020, still with the Navigators ISM. They love hosting UT-Tyler students in their home, just a mile from campus. Most of the students they have befriended are from Bangladesh, Nepal, China, and Nigeria. Besides seeing them on campus, Scott and Marion give them rides to Walmart, clinics, the Social Security office, or to wherever they need a ride. They try to walk daily in their neighborhood, where we’ve surprisingly met neighbors from eleven different countries!
