Mercy Street Dallas – Day 1

With our minivans loaded down with students and bags, Bethel HSM left for West Dallas on Sunday Afternoon. It was two weeks ago that a few of Bethel’s students were in Jamaica serving our brothers and sisters and now we have arrived to work with a ministry called Mercy Street. Check out this link for more information about this incredible ministry that God is using to transform a community (www.mercystreetdalls.org).

This summer God has been challenging our student ministry with Acts 1:8
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Our hope this summer is that the students would be begin to see that God has place for each one of them to serve in their hometown, in their region, and their world. We have started this by serving internationally in Jamaica and now we are serving in our region: Dallas.

After our first day of meeting some new friends and handing out some water in the communities surrounding Mercy Street, we were able to sit down with Pastor Jerry Wagner and Hector, who serve with the High Schoolers of Mercy Street. We called it the hot seat. The students were allowed to ask them any question about life and ministry in West Dallas. They asked some really great questions like;

  • “Why did you move your family into this neighborhood? “How do you share Jesus with people of West Dallas?” and “What are some of the struggles the ministry faces?”

As they answered the questions you could see our students beginning to see the importance of serving God by serving the people in our region. When I asked Jake Anderson what he thought about today he said, “I have gone to Africa a couple times and my heart is to serve in Africa but I am glad to know that there are places near me where I can serve.” This exactly what we are asking God to show us. That God use these students to be His witnesses wherever the Lord leads them.

We have an exciting day tomorrow including

  • painting graffiti,
  • preparing crafts
  • pulling weeds.

We will wrap up tomorrow by joining the Mercy Street team for their High School Bible study. Please pray that God would continue to open up our eyes to see what He wants us to see and that God would use all of the students to make much of Jesus.
