Jamaica Trip – Day 1

Wah gwaan (Jamaican for “hello”),

Our team woke up at 3:30 AM to catch our flight from DFW to Montego Bay. We arrived in Montego Bay right on schedule at 10:10 (Jamaica is on Central Time) and made it through customs w/out a hitch! At the airport we were greeted by our driver David, who loaded us up in his tour van and drove us along the North coast to New Generations Camp. Along, the way we were hungry so David took us to a local food place to eat called Juices Patties. I think we were all a little nervous with our choice of “patties”, so like good Texans most of us ordered beef patties. After lunch we had another 1.5 hour drive to the camp we all just looked out the van window taking pictures and enjoying the beautiful scenery.

We arrive at NG around 1:00PM and were immediately greeted by Auntie Nel & Lemon (camp handy man). We settled into our dorm and had a brief meeting with Auntie Nel, who wanted to hear the stories from all the kids on why they wanted to serve here and how they raised support. It was great listening to each one of them share their stories and heart behind the why, they wanted to go on the mission trip. After a short tour, Auntie Nel put us to work!!! So we have been painting boards for the “go’deh” or “GaGa” pit as well as moving rocks and clearing debris from around the camp. (click here if you don’t know what a gaga pit is.)

Tomorrow we will finish pouring the concrete for the pit. In just a few short minutes Monique (Nel’s assistant & summer camp counselor) will take us to the river to cool off! After the river will be time for dinner then early to bed.

Thank you all so much for praying! It has been great getting to know one another and serving together. I will try to e-mail again soon. The team wants to tell their families Wah gwaan & they Love you.

Blessings,

Luke Y
